Most software has become fairly inexpensive, thanks to intense retail
competition and suites of bundled products. The exceptions are in the office
suite, high-end graphics, vertical market, and enterprise software areas.
We recommend that you become familiar with one family or brand of
products and stick with it. Upgrade to the next generation of products only
if you really need the new features. When you ARE ready to upgrade, don’t
buy as soon as the new version is available; wait for a "point update" or a
service pack update (let someone else find the "point-oh" bugs). Also, be
sure to take advantage of rebates and competitive upgrade offers to minimize
costs.
